Q&A WITH SHANET FOOTS

Assistant Director and a Lifelong Learner

Q: Shanet, you've been with New Direction Childcare for over 23 years. What age group do you teach, and what initially inspired you to become a teacher?

A: "I've always loved children and wanted to help people improve themselves. Throughout my career, my motivation has been fueled by the energy and curiosity of the kids at our facility. They push me to learn more and become better every day."

Q: Can you share a memorable experience that highlights your teaching philosophy?

A: "Absolutely! One of the key moments for me was when I was working with a child and identified areas where they were struggling. By tailoring resources to meet their specific needs, I saw significant progress. This approach—targeted support and repetition until mastery—is central to my teaching."

Q: What innovative methods do you use to keep your students engaged and ensure they absorb what they're learning?

A: "Repetition is key, but it's not just about repeating information; it's about presenting it in new and engaging ways each time. This method ensures that learning is never dull and always accessible."

Q: Creativity is crucial in education. How do you incorporate it into your teaching?

A: "Creativity in teaching comes from adapting and expanding on ideas in fun ways. For instance, after a lesson, I might create a related activity that builds on what we've learned, which helps cement the knowledge and makes learning enjoyable."

"Teaching isn't just a job; it's a passion and a lifelong journey. Every day, I strive to make learning exciting and accessible, nurturing curiosity and a love for discovery in each child." ~ Shanet Foots

Q: Education is about more than just what happens in the classroom. How do you collaborate with parents to extend learning beyond school?

A: "We conduct annual surveys that allow parents to provide feedback and suggest improvements. This open line of communication ensures that learning is consistent at home and school."

Q: Speaking of memorable, what's your favorite childhood memory related to learning, and how does it impact your teaching today?

A: "I loved going on field trips! They were an adventure, an extension of the classroom into the real world. I try to bring that sense of adventure to my teaching by showing kids photos from trips I've taken and discussing what can be learned from those experiences."

Q: What do you think you'd be doing if you weren't a teacher?

A: "I might have been a pediatrician, but outside of teaching, I channel my creative energy into writing poetry. It's a wonderful way to express oneself and explore new ideas."

Q: Finally, what adventurous experience has influenced your teaching style?

A: "Snorkeling in Australia's Great Barrier Reef taught me the value of exploration and curiosity—qualities I bring into the classroom to encourage my students always to be eager to learn and explore."

Q: Any words of wisdom for aspiring teachers?

A: "Always keep your eyes open—literally and figuratively! Like my 'superpower' of having eyes in the back of my head, always be observant and ready to adapt. Your awareness will help you connect with your students in meaningful ways."
